make on design sponge + class updates

hey, makers!

do you love design sponge? I bet your answer to this question is Y-E-S. that’s why I’m totally thrilled to be featured on the site today, teaching the color theory coasters from my new book, embroider everything workshop. if you have any interest in or love of embroidery or needlepoint, it’s worth checking out. in the video I show a number of techniques like threading the needle (surprisingly tricky to do with thick tapestry wool!), working the basic continental stitch, how to follow a charted design and finishing steps. of course I teach all of these things plus much more in the make studio, too! the next intro to needlepoint workshop is happening on sun mar 4 at 2pm.

in sewing-related news I’ve added a last-minute zip-o-riffic pillow on sat 1/28 at noon. if you’re interested in making home decor items and want to take your skills to the next level this is the class for you! btw, if you’ve only taken the intro to sewing machine workshop don’t be intimidated by the zipper. I will teach you everything you need to know!

while I’m at it, I should also mention that there are only 2 slots left in the next fashion lab: session 102 (starts tues 2/7 at 630pm). both of our january labs sold out (!), so I’ve added march dates to keep up with the demand (weds 3/14 at 630pm). please let me know if you’re interested in april dates or anything else! I’m happy to add new things to the calendar.

speaking of new things, I’m working on a make kids: intro to sewing machine (ages 7-13) series starting next month, as well as a spring break and summer fashion camp for kids and teens. (wish I wasn’t too old to go!) I’ll send out a newsletter as soon as the curriculum is set and the dates are booked. if you’d like to be contacted I can also add you to a waiting list. just send an email to info@makeworkshop.com and I will be in touch with the dates and times. please also spread the word to any parents or kids that you think might be interested! I really appreciate any help with getting the word out.

last, but not least, we still have room in the mon 1/30 earrings workshop as well as tues 1/31 one-day crochet, along with many other offerings moving forward into february. seriously, where does the time go? as always, we hope to see you in the make studio soon!

january 2012 news

hey, makers!
hope you’ve been having an excellent 2012. with the new year in full swing things have been extra busy around the make studio. several dates have sold out in the last few weeks, so I’ve added lots of extra workshops through march to help keep up with demand. new and noteworthy offerings that are still available include knitting II: baby sweater (thu 1/19), 2-hour pillow making workshop (only 2 spots left! tue 1/24), make earrings : one-night workshop (mon 1/30) and one-day crochet (tue 1/31). there are also dates for panty making, decoupage, soapmaking, intro to jewelry design, soldered ring(s), blockprinting, fashion and home lab learn-to-sew series and more scheduled in feb-apr. our new site allows you to see everything in date order here, which is pretty cool. or you can simply visit the online calendar. and if there’s ever a class you’d like to take and it’s not on the schedule and/or at a time that works for you, please just send an email to and we’ll do our best to add a session. please note that we are especially flexible during the week from 11am-4pm as well as weekend afternoons.

is your new year’s resolution to learn how to sew?

if the answer is yes, you’re in good company! we scheduled two sessions of our popular learn-to-sew fashion lab series this month and they are already sold out. the next two sets of dates begin tues feb 7 and weds mar 14. if you’re interested in joining in on the fun you’ll definitely want to sign up soon to guarantee your spot in class. as always, we hope to see you!

happy new year!

just a quick post to send best wishes for a happy 2012 to all of our past, present and future makers. please let us know if we can do to help you to achieve your crafty new year’s resolutions. there’s never been a better time to learn to sew, knit, crochet, make jewelry and more! as always, we can’t wait to see what you make.

december news : last-minute gifts, silhouette making + more!

crochet ornaments are just one of the things you can learn to make at one-day crochet, tue 12/20 630-9pm

hello, makers!
it’s probably not really news that I plan to make all of my gifts this year, but to be honest, even I’m already sweating the timing (I can’t believe it’s already dec 6th!) if you’re also starting to feel like one of santa’s elves, and not in a good way, make is here to help. throughout the month we’re offering a series of last-minute gift workshops in jewelry making, soapmaking, crochet, and needlepoint. not only will you likely be able to leave the studio with a completed handmade gift, you’ll have all of the skills to make many, many more! (crafting is also a great stress reliever so if you’re just looking for something fun to do to balance out the holiday madness, you came to the right place!)
new! silohuette making (paper craft) tue 12/14, 630-830pm

new workshop: silhouette making (paper craft)
this is a class I’ve been dying to offer for years: silhouette making. super cool, right? learn how to make your own one-of-a-kind paper silhouettes in this cute + paste workshop. no skills necessary.

book tour : embroider everything workshop
I’m out on the road again later this week promoting embroider everything workshop in lexington, cincinatti and cleveland, and next week I’ll be in portland and seattle. if you have any friends and family in any of these places I’d love to meet them! autographed (and personalized) copies of the book are also available in the make studio. just send us an email and we’ll get a copy out to you tout de suite.

make gift certificates
if you’re looking for a gift for your favorite maker, may I be so bold as to suggest a make gift certificate? they’re available in any amount and can be sent either as a handmade letterpress card (via snail mail) or as an ecard.

as always, we hope to see you in the make studio soon!

xoxo,

welcome to the new site

I’d like to officially announce the launch of the new make site. I am so excited about all of the new-and-improved features that I almost don’t know where to start, but let me begin by giving props to its designer and my friend, doug ng. thanks to doug, the make site now features iCalendar, google maps AND a dedicated shopping cart which makes secure online registration a piece of cake. (later days, paypal!)

the size and number of images has also been increased for maximum inspiration, and there is not just one, but two make blogs for you to check out. the “news” blog will feature all of the latest happenings around the make studio and “diana’s blog” will be an online diary written by yours truly. welcome, friend!
