one night pillow making workshop

- square pillow form. down-filled forms are especially nice! (if you don't want to shop for one, just bring a yard of fabric and you can get a form after the class.)
- when you make a pillow, the cover is cut to the same dimensions as
the form, but an envelope closure back requires extra yardage. to be
safe, buy enough fabric to cover your entire pillow 2 times (e.g. 16
x 16 pillow, calls for a 32 x 32 piece of fabric, so get a yard.)
feel free to buy muslin if you just want to practice the first time around. the back and front can also be made from different fabrics if you'd like! - recommended fabrics: cotton and cotton blends in a medium weight are the easiest to sew. stay away from fun furs, velvet, stretch fabrics and heavy weight upholstery. please feel free to contact us for advice!

sewing I: make a skirt (pencil skirt OR naughty secretary)
xx scroll to the top of this page for a list of recommended suppliers in nyc xxx
- for naughty secretary: SEW: sew everything workshop (pattern + instructions are inside)
- for pencil skirt you'll need burda pattern #8155, which is available online at sewingpatterns.com.a paper pattern is required for the first class; please order it in advance and/or arrange for timely delivery. (in nyc at p & s fabrics or paron fabrics carry a limited selection of patterns; call ahead to see if they have it in stock in your size.)
- supplies for both skirts:
- 1 yard (60" wide) OR 1.5 yards (45" to 59" wide) of a stable and easy to sew woven fashion fabric like wool, denim, cotton sateen, twill, corduroy or linen. NO knits, nothing too slinky, stretchy, sheer, drapey, thick, etc.

- 1 1/2 yard (60" wide) OR 2 1/2yards (45" to 59" wide) of a stable and easy to sew woven fashion fabric like lightweight linen, crepe, faille or a stable knit. nothing too slinky, stretchy, sheer, drapey, thick, etc.
- 1/4 yard fusible interfacing
- butterick pattern 5211--we're making style B w/o belt. sewingpatterns.com is a good place to get this! bring a hardcopy pattern to class, not the download. (it takes ages to tape it together!)

- scissors, either new or used only on fabric

sewing II: make a dress
xx scroll to the top of this page for a list of recommended suppliers in nyc xxx
- SEW: sew everything workshop (paper pattern + instructions are inside)
- fabric yardage: 2 5/8 yards of a fabric that is at least 54" wide (v. important because the skirt pattern piece will not fit on a fabric that is less wide). recommended materials: dupioni, cotton sateen, voile, lightweight linen, wool or wool blends.
- 3/4 yards of lining fabric for bodice. if the fabric you're using for the dress is light-to-medium weight you can use the same for the lining, or pick up some voile or china silk (or similar.) warning: lining fabrics can be tricky to sew! I'd stay away from anything that seems super slippery and/or ask for advice at the store.
- 13" or longer invisible zipper (we can always shorten it!)
- disappearing ink pen
- all-purpose thread to match your fabric
- straight pins
- pin cushion
- seam ripper
- scissors, either new or used only on fabric

sewing II: zippered hobo handbag
xx scroll to the top of this page for a list of recommended suppliers in nyc xxx
- fabric yardage: 1 1/2 yards for bag AND lining (i.e. 3 yards total.) bag: medium weight canvas, denim, wool, corduroy, cotton, linen, etc. can use upholstery fabric, but avoid any material that is especially thick/heavyweight, since it will be difficult to stitch and press. we recommend buying an easy to sew fabric; you can sew more difficult styles later on. lining: cotton shirting, sateen or similar. avoid anything that seems slippery as it will be trickier to cut and pin.
- 20" all-purpose zipper (NOT an invisible zipper. ask to have a longer zipper cut to this length)
- optional: D rings or similar for strap (will discuss at first meeting; no need to buy before class)
