frequently asked questions
when is the next (insert class name here!) being offered?
we update our calendar in the form of a monthly email newsletter. so if you join the online mailing list--a handy form is on the news page--you’ll be kept in the loop for each and every class.
what’s your newsletter policy?
we do our best to stick to a once-a-month newsletter and the occasional invite to special events like book signings, stitching parties and craft fairs. rest assured: the list will never, ever be sold or shared. unsubscribe by sending us an email.
where is make workshop located?
a map and subway directions can be found on the studio page or by clicking here.
when can I visit MAKE workshop?
if you’re not signed up for a class, the best time to see what MAKE is all about is during our open studios or frequent special events. check the calendar for what’s coming up. if none of these times work for you, give us a call and we’ll set up an appointment. we’d love to see you!
how do I know how many spots are left in a class?
we do our best to update the website as soon as a session sells out. if the “sign me up” button is showing, it’s pretty likely you’ll be able to get in. if not, we’ll be in touch. sign up early—it’s the best way to guarantee your spot.
I signed up for a class but haven't heard anything...should I be worried?
not at all! our enrollments are processed by a real-live human, so if you sign up over the weekend or on a holiday there's a good chance it'll take us a few days to get back to you with an official confirmation. in any case, let us know if you're concerned about your enrollment and we'll follow up asap.
what happens if I can't make a class?
because of the special nature of our offerings and very limited enrollment, classes are nonrefundable and there are no makeups or transfers into alternate sessions. we recommend waiting to sign up until you’re absolutely sure you’ll be able to make it! for more info, go to the enrollment policy page.
what supplies do I need to bring?
take a look at the class description for information re supplies. many classes have a supply list posted on the website; if you’re unsure or have questions, please feel free to contact us. check out the suppliers page for a few of our favorite local shops.
when should I arrive for class?
make opens 10-15 minutes before the scheduled start time. many of our teachers are working artists and designers and need time to set up before greeting students. if you arrive early, grab a drink or snack at the bowery whole foods. it's only a block away!
can you recommend a sewing machine?
try borrowing before buying. put the word out to loved ones and friends and chances are somebody out there has a spare machine with your name on it. if the lender hasn’t been used for a while, take it to a sewing machine repair shop for a check-up.
a new no-frills machine will run you around $200-$300. of course you can spend much, much more! if you’ve never sewn before, consider taking an intro to sewing machine class at make or buy from a local dealer that offers free lessons with purchase. the more experience you have sewing before buy, the better!
where can I have my sewing machine serviced?
in nyc we recommend space savers, 132 w. 23rd 212.691.3666
do you know anybody who can make something for me?
it depends. email us and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do to help.
